Edgartown Harbor Light Under the Stars

This past weekend the Mr. and I were lucky enough to sneak away for a couple of days on Martha’s Vineyard, an island south of Cape Cod, Massachusetts where we stayed at the Harbor View Hotel. This hotel was the perfect location, not just because of the great restaurants or the gorgeous pool (which sadly doesn’t open until Memorial Day), but because its overlooking the Nantucket Sound with a view towards Chappaquiddick, and most exciting for me, the Edgartown Harbor Light. Our dates weren’t flexible so I was at first disappointed to see that we were arriving to the moon in the Waxing Gibbous part of its cycle (an almost full moon) which meant that I wouldn’t be able to get the shot of the milky way with the lighthouse that I had been dreaming of… then I realized how stunning the moonlit landscape could be, and my excitement quickly grew!

After a long day of work and travel Mr. JulesBF crashed early for the night, after tucking him in, I jumped into my cold gear, and packed my winter coat with all my photo necessities… with the tripod on one shoulder and camera on the other I quietly snuck out of the room and into the quiet, a quite only interrupted by the sounds of peepers just warming up their music for the season.

No light was needed to guide my way, with a bright moon I found my path and started taking photos immediately, my only company being a couple of white tailed bunnies and some loons in the distance. It was the perfect evening, the only thing missing was the Mr., but he needed his sleep so I was happy to explore solo.

After the first twenty minutes or so I kept telling myself that I should head back… yet the light house kept beckoning as the path provided a new adventure around each turn. Of course this whole time I was watching my back for wayward humans or wild animals with a readiness to swing the tripod and run… honestly though, my biggest concern should have been that I left my sneakers in the car on the mainland in an attempt to save space and my riding boots probably weren’t the best footwear for traversing sand while carrying gear. Two hours later I finally began the trek back to the lovely hotel, not to sleep of course – this was my first night photography since receiving my new camera (thank goodness for great cover all warranties for when camera’s crash onto lava rocks…), I needed to upload photos to see what I was able to capture, and I was not disappointed. Lesson learned, don’t let an hour on the clock stop you from experiencing some amazing views, who knows, there could be stunning photos to capture!

A big thanks to Mom of JulesBF for coming to watch our new kitten. JulesBF world, meet Max! Max is a Maine Coon, Himalayan mix, which means he will be huge and a total ball of love covered in the longest cat hair the world may ever have seen! Currently we’re in the bite the hand (and foot) that feeds him stage, which makes us even more grateful that my Mom was able to watch him while we traveled… and that she didn’t run into the night to get away from him 😉
